Aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Beobachtungsorte erscheint die NLC deutlich vorm Hintergrund der Sterne verschoben. Der hellste Stern in beiden Bildern ist Capella im Fuhrmann. Vom Wendelstein aus betrachtet (Bild oben) steht die Wolke deutlich weiter im Osten, der hellere Teil der NLC liegt horizontnäher. Nicht von Schlägl aus sichtbar war der schwache NLC-Abschnitt direkt unterhalb von Capella (Bild oben). Der 1838 m hohe Wendelstein (47° 42' 15'' N; 12° 00' 46'' E) liegt etwa 180 km südwestlich von Schlägl (48° 38´ N; 13° 58´ E).

Because of the different places of observation the NLC is shifted in front of the stars. The bright star in both images is Capella in the constellation of Aurigae. Observing from the Wendelstein the cloud is placed more in the east direction and the bright part is much nearer to the horizon. It was not possible to watch the faint part of the cloud in Schlägl. The height of the Wendelstein (47° 42' 15'' N; 12° 00' 46'' E) is 1838 m; it is located 180 km southwest of Schlägl (48° 38´ N; 13° 58´ E).
